Crafting Heirlooms for Family & Friends

Creating an object that someone considers an heirloom is the ultimate honor a product can recieve.  It means that it's built to stand the test of time, but more importantly, has achieved a deep emotional resonance with the owner.  Over the past few years as my work has become more digital, I've found an outlet making gifts for my friends and family that try to hit that heirloom status.  It's also an oportunity for me to try out new skills.

WARREN GUITARS "DIRTY HARRY"

WARREN GUITARS "DIRTY HARRY"

//WOODWORKING+INDUSTRIAL.DESIGN

My dad has his own gifting hobby, covering songs with re-written personal lyrics for family ocations.  To pay it back, for my dads 60th birthday I built him an electric guitar based off a Fender Telecaster.  My goal was to clean up the iconic design and add a bunch of personal details inspired by other famous guitars.  Many of the shapes have been simplified and the fret board and pickups have been set into the body.  The body is ash with a redwood top, the neck is maple with an ebony fretboard, and the hardware is bare brass.  On the back I laser etched my dads discography

ENGAGEMENT RING COLLABORATION

//CONCEPT

I worked with the talented Hannah Woodard on an engagement ring for my wife.  The details were a metaphor for my vows.  A natural black diamond set in yellow gold.

RESTORED SCHWINN TANDEM

//RESTORATION

For my sisters wedding I restored a 50's Schwinn Tandem bike.  Cleaned up the paint and chrome, and added Brooks seats and grips, installed vintage headlamps and basket.

SETTLERS OF CATAN BOARD

//WOODWORKING+GRAPHICS

For my best friends wedding, I built the game we used to play together all through highschool.  Settlers of Catan has become a classic board game, but the paper tiles quickly become warped and bent after a few years of heavy use.  I decided to build a set that might last a little longer, with laser engraved tiles, custom cards, and hand machined stainless steel pieces.  If you're interested in making your own set I'm happy to share my designs.
